People in Asia spit a lot. Walking down the street there’s so much saliva flying around from all angles that you feel like you’re in The Matrix. Nowhere that I’ve been loves spitting more than Myanmar. Here the spit is mostly coloured red, not because of poor dental hygiene, but because they’re heavily into chewing betel leaves, which colour the saliva and seem like huge fun to projectile gob around the place. It’s widely encouraged, with spitoons next to tables in restaurants and plastic spit bags hanging on the bag of seats on buses.
